A behind-the-scenes look at Capezzana: between innovation and tradition

Welcome to the beating heart of Capezzana, where history meets innovation in a fascinating journey through time and taste. Located among the lush hills of Tuscany, the Capezzana Estate is a rare example of how passion for viticulture and olive growing can evolve while respecting traditions and embracing the most modern innovations. This enchanting place, rich in history and culture, is a living testament to how the bond with the land and its care can cross centuries, maintaining a balance between the agricultural techniques of yesteryear and contemporary needs.

From Respectful Agriculture to Organic Certification

Capezzana Estate’s journey toward more respectful and sustainable agriculture began in 2009, a journey that has led us to be proud to achieve BIO certification from Bioagricert. This achievement is not only a symbol of commitment and quality, but also a testament to our deep respect for the land and for the future generations who will inherit its fruits.

Abandoning the use of chemicals and returning to the farming practices of yesteryear marked a significant turning point for the estate. This change has strengthened our connection with nature and allowed us to rediscover the importance of direct contact with the land. Traditional farming practices, such as green manure, have once again become the norm in our vineyards, where we sow legumes to naturally fix nitrogen in the soil and bring organic matter.

By using light tractors to avoid soil compaction, we help maintain the health of the soil, enriching it with oxygen and water and promoting the growth of beneficial microorganisms. This respectful approach allows us to preserve the ecosystem of the estate, ensuring that our wines and oil are not only of high quality, but also an expression of an environment where biodiversity is safeguarded.

Unique Terroirs for Wines Rich in History

The Capezzana Estate, set in the beautiful setting of Carmignano, has made its geographic location a strong point in the production of wines that tell a centuries-long story. The decision to return to traditional agricultural practices such as green manure has renewed and enriched our soils, making them a viable and sustainable environment for crops. Sowing legumes between the vineyard rows is not just an agronomic choice-it is a way to honor and preserve the history and quality of our soil.

These techniques, combined with the use of light tractors, are essential to avoid soil compaction and to foster a rich and diverse ecosystem. Healthy, well-oxygenated soil is the secret to vigorous vines and quality grapes, resulting in wines rich in character and personality. Soil health is directly related to the quality of our wines, which are the result of a unique terroir and a respectful, environmentally friendly approach to viticulture.

Tenuta di Capezzana carries out the philosophy of ‘integrated respect”, referring natural methods instead of chemicals to manage the vineyard. This sustainable approach not only protects the environment, but also ensures that each bottle produced is an authentic expression of the land from which it comes.

Nature at the Center

At Capezzana, our approach to viticulture and agriculture is based on a fundamental principle: an integrated respect for nature. This philosophy leads us to work in harmony with the environment, rather than against it. Our estate deliberately limits the use of chemicals, preferring instead natural methods to manage the normal challenges posed by insects and other natural elements.

We believe that natural, balanced and controlled pest control is sufficient to maintain an acceptable level of any damage, thus sustaining a healthy and viable ecosystem. This respect for nature not only helps preserve the biodiversity of our land, but also ensures that the land remains fertile and productive for future generations.

This eco-friendly vision is directly reflected in the quality of our products. Capezzana’s wines and oil are the result of an environment where biodiversity is respected and enhanced. They are authentic expressions of an area that has been cared for and nurtured with love and respect, ensuring not only the exceptional quality but also the long-term sustainability of our productions.

The Cellar of Old Vintages

The Capezzana winery is a veritable treasure chest that holds wine treasures, witnesses to a long and rich wine-making history. Here, in an environment that speaks of the past and tradition, rest fine vintages of wines, each telling a unique and unrepeatable story. These carefully preserved bottles are not only exemplars of excellent quality wines, but also represent the true essence of Capezzana, an unbreakable bond between the work of man and the gift of nature.

Each vintage stored in our cellar is a living testimony to the evolution of Capezzana’s taste and style. The new vintages, while being modern and in line with the expectations of the contemporary consumer, always maintain a strong link with our history and our land. In this way, the Capezzana winery becomes a place where time seems suspended, a place where the past, present and future of wine meet in a continuous and fascinating dialogue.

The connection with local history and culture

The Capezzana Estate is deeply rooted in the history and culture of the surrounding area. Located between Florence, Prato and Pistoia, in the heart of Carmignano, the estate has a history dating back to the time of Charlemagne. This area, famous for wine and oil production, was one of the first in Tuscany to receive an official delimitation for wine production, established by Grand Duke Cosimo III in 1716.

The estate’s nobility and historical importance were further consolidated when the Contini Bonacossi family acquired it in 1926. Their passion and dedication transformed Capezzana into a modern example of agricultural and winemaking excellence, combining agricultural tradition with modernity. Today the estate is managed by a collaboration between the fourth and fifth generations of the family, continuing to carry on tradition with innovation and respect for the past.

The Renaissance villa at Capezzana, with its 1574 carvings and even older foundations, is a symbol of the historical and cultural heritage of the place. Every room, every stone in the villa tells a story, offering visitors an experience that goes beyond wine tasting, immersing them in a rich and fascinating past.
